'Broken Toe Peanut Butter'

Pour ceux qui n'étaient pas au courant, je me suis (plus que certainement) cassée le petit doigt de pied (je passe mon tour concernant le pourquoi du comment). C'est douloureux mais surtout handicapant : je boite, et ne peux donc plus aller faire mes joggings.

Ma coloc, trop sympa, était complètement paniquée (j'lui ai pourtant expliqué que ce n'était absolument pas grave). Elle s'est précipitée pour m'acheter du beurre de cacahuète (le crunchy, avec des morceaux c'est meilleur). Ça donne ça :

Those of you whom did not know, I (most probably) broke my toe (I won't give any further details about how and why). It is painful, but above all disabling: I am walking with a limp, and therefore cannot run anymore.

My roomy, really sweet, was totaly panicking (I tried to explain her that it was no big deal). She rushed to buy peanut butter (crunchy one of course). Here you go:

Grande nouvelle : Pauline arrive. Pauline (alias Pilou) c'est certainement la plus chouette rencontre que j'ai faite à l'OT (Office du Tourisme) de Meg'. J-22, ça promet encore de belles péripéties !

Big news: Pauline is getting there. Pauline (dixit Pilou) is most probably the best person I met while working at the Megeve TO (Tourism Office). D-22, it helds a few surprises in store!

Oktoberfest Brisbane

Du 9-11 octobre et du 16-18 octobre c'est l'Oktoberfest à Brisbane. Une bonne occasion pour retrouver les Frenchies de la Gold Coast (Tony, Steve, Nico, etc.).

From the 9th to the 11th of October, Oktoberfest is in Brisbane. A great opportunity to meet again with the Frenchies from the Gold Coast (Tony, Steve, Nico, etc.).

Donc le 18/11/2009 je suis officiellement en grandes vacances (bah oui on marche la tête en bas, alors forcément les vacances d'été sont de décembre à mars).

I am officially starting my summer vacations on the 18th of November 2009 (indeed, we walk on our hands, summer vacations are from December to March).

Papa maman j'ai trouvé un boulot ! / Dad, Mom, I got a job!

RDV ce matin 9h30 avec le manager de Cash Converters (Fortitude Valley) pour mon tout premier entretien au pays des koalas (bah ouais y'a pas QUE des kangourous, niack).

I have got an appointment at 9:30am with the Cash Converters Manager (in Fortitude Valley); it will be my very first interview since I landed in koalas' land (Australia is not about kangaroos only).

Le poste : promotion du magasin (distribution de flyers quoi, au grands maux les grands remèdes).

The job: store promotion (in other words: distributing flyers).

Rémunération : AUD$20 de l'heure (donc plutôt pas mal).

Horaires : flexibles tant que je fais 15h par semaine (à répartir moitié en semaine + un samedi ou un dimanche).

Working hours: flexitime.

Mes nouveaux livres de chevet / My new bedside books

J'ai reçu mes livres de préparation au GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), ça va me faire de quoi bouquiner pour les prochains mois...

Le GMAT késaco : un test standardisé en langue anglaise permettant de mesurer les compétences jugées importantes pour l'étude du Management. Le GMAT évalue trois compétences :
- Quantitatif (maths !)
- Vocabulaire (anglais)
- Analytique

I just got my GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) Prep books; give me some reading for the next months.

GMAT, what's that: an English standarnised test that measures verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that the examinee has developed over a long period of time in his/her education and work. Three main competences:
- The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
- The Quantitative section
- The Verbal Ability

Le système de notation / The grading system

Parce que tout ne tourne pas autour de mes péripéties 'melburnians' (= appellation anglaise voyons !), voici quelques informations concernant le système de notation à l'australienne. Tout d'abord, leur moyenne (autrement appelée GPA; pour les nuls: Grade Point Average = Sum of (grade points × course unit value) / total number of credit points attempted) est sur 7 (et non pas 4 comme chez les Américains).

Un peu perturbant au début, surtout lorsque l'on a été habitué à des notations sur 4 . D'autant plus les notes ne sont pas reconnues en 'A', 'B', etc., mais en 'HD', 'D', etc. (voir le tableau ci-dessous).

Because my experience here is not only based on my melburnian adventures, here are some information regarding the Aussie grading system. Firstly, their average grade (also called GPA) is out of 7 (and not 4, like in the American system).

A bit disturbing at first, especially when I was used to get a GPA out of 4. Furthermore, grades are not known as 'A', 'B', etc., but 'HD', 'D', etc. (have a look at the table).

D'après différentes études, seulement 3% des étudiants obtiennent des 'HD'... En gros y'a du boulot.

Studies show that only 3% of students get 'HD'... Basically, I better start working.

Une spécialité australienne : Le 'Tim Tam Slam' / An Aussie specialty: the 'Tim Tam Slam'

Les Tim Tam sont les barres chocolatées préférées des australiens ! Il en existe de toutes sortes :

Tim Tam are Australian's favourite chocolate-covered biscuit. There are different flavours:

- Original
- Dark Chocolate
- Double Coat
- White
- Chewy-Caramel (♥)
- Choc-Hazelnut

Et j'en passe.

La méthode de 'dégustation' est certainement l'aspect le plus attrayant. Leçon de dégustation:

The tasting principle is certainly the funniest part of it. Tasting lesson:

1. Ouvrir son paquet de Tim Tam préféré / Open Tim Tam pack.
   
2. Préparer sa boisson chaude (thé, café, chocolat) / Brew coffee, tea, or something hot.
   
3. Croquer le coin de chacune des extrémités du Tim Tam / Bite off a small portion of each end of the Tim Tam.
   
4. Tremper l'une des extrémité (croquée au préalable, vous m'suivez ?!) dans la boisson chaude, et aspirer comme si l'on buvait avec une paille / Dip one end into the hot beverage and suck it like you would if it were a straw.
   
5. Dès que le Tim Tam commence à fondre (5 secondes environ) il est prêt à être dégusté / As soon as the drink hits your mouth and you feel the Tim Tam begins to melt (5 seconds more or less), shove the whole treat into your mouth and eat.
   

I ♥ Melbourne - Part IV

Vendredi était consacré à la visite des parcs nationaux à proximité de Melbourne. C'est avec Kate que je suis allée faire une viré chez nos amis les pingouins de Phillip Island. Les photos ne sont pas d'excellente qualité, mais sans le flash et en pleine nuit dur dur de faire mieux.

Friday was devoted to the visit of national parks nearby Melbourne. Kate joined me with the trip to Phillip Island and its penguins. Pictures are not of such good quality, but with no flash and after night fall, it was difficult to do better.

Un peu de culture G: saviez-vous que les 'little penguins' australiens sont les plus petits du monde ? Ils mesurent en moyenne entre 30 et 35 cm de haut, et ne pèsent pas plus de 1 kg une fois la taille adulte atteinte.

Notes: did you know that the Australian little penguins are the smallest one in the world? They measure in between 30 to 35 cm, and weight no more than 1kg once they reach their definite size.

I ♥ Melbourne - Part III

La National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), de Melbourne, accueille l’exposition Salvador Dalí : Liquid Desire, qui sera visible du 13 juin au 4 octobre 2009. Autant dire que ça rentrait pile-poil dans mes dates (et puis il n'y a pas que le shopping et la rando dans la vie).

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne, presents the Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire exposition. The exposition will be opened to the public from the 13th of June to the 4th of October 2009. No need to say that it suited me perfectly (moreover, there is more to life than shopping and hiking).

En somme une très chouette exposition qui non seulement retrace les nombreuses œuvres (croquis et peintures) de Dalí mais également sa collaboration avec Walt Disney, ses créations joaillières, ainsi que quelques unes de ses photographies.

To sum up, it was a really nice exposition, not only presenting Dalí's usual work (paintings and sketches) but also showing his collaboration with Walt Disney, his jeweler's work, and some of his photographies.

I ♥ Melbourne - Part II

Le Royal Botanic Gardens est reconnu comme étant l'un des plus beaux et des plus raffinés jardins botaniques au monde. Le jardin s'étend sur plus de 38 hectares; et on y trouve plus de 10 000 espèces de plantes.

RBG Melbourne is recognised as one of the world's finest botanic gardens. There are overr 10,000 species, spread over 38 hectares.

Enfin des vacances, on ne les aura pas volées ! Mid-semester break (du 26.09.09 au 05.10.09) était la parfaite occasion d'aller rendre visite à Manue, et de visiter Melbourne.

Finally, mid-semester break is there (from the 26th of September to the 5th of October 2009). It was the perfect timing to visit Manue, and see what is Melbourne like.
